Presented in 1080i high definition and framed inside a 1.78:1 window, Julieta Venegas: MTV Unplugged offers a solid amount of clarity, depth, detail, and color. The soundstage -- with a black and dark blue background -- is offset by a sprinkling of color in front: Venegas' purple dress, her wooden acoustic guitar, and the shiny brass instruments. Fine detail, while not astounding, suffices. Close-up shots of Venegas reveals her sparkly gold-tinted eye makeup, and up-close shots of instruments reveal normal wear and tear, fine lines, and even some fingerprints on glossy finishes when viewed at certain angles under the harsh stage lights. Background details -- particularly the crowd that's generally bathed in a slight purple haze and disappearing into darkness -- can look a bit soft, but then again, they're not the star of the show. The transfer does see the occasional minor shimmering and jagged edges, but there's not much room to complain and other artifacts and anomalies are practically nonexistent. A title like Julieta Venegas: MTV Unplugged is all about the music, and while it sounds wonderful (more on that in a moment), the disc does offer a suitably good image to back it up.

Julieta Venegas: MTV Unplugged arrives on Blu-ray with a trio of audio options: a PCM 5.1 uncompressed mix, a 2-channel stereo PCM track, and a lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 offering. Each produces a terribly loud experience at reference level, and many listeners will want to turn it down quite a bit.

The PCM 5.1 track offers a full, room-filling listen. There's a noticeable drop-off not in quality but in the sense of space that defines the 5.1 track. The music really opens up in the 5.1 PCM configuration, allowing it to permeate the entire soundstage with a warmth and naturalism that places the listener in the front row. While 2.0 track sounds fine, it's not quite as satisfying a listen from a central, seated position in the home theater, though as a selection for those times while moving about the house, it's quite nice.

Lastly, the Dolby Digital 5.1 track comes with a noticeable drop-off in absolute clarity and precision. Without the PCM track to directly compare it to, it would sound seem to sound very good, but the wonderfully clear delivery afforded to the music by the PCM 5.1 mix definitely makes the uncompressed track the one of choice for this release. What a pleasant surprise. Julieta Venegas: MTV Unplugged makes for this reviewer's first exposure to the Grammy-winning sensation, and this performance resonates from the first song to the last and long after the show is over. At times hypnotic, smooth, and relaxing, and at others engendering the urge to stand up and dance, Venegas' music -- and her lovely performance -- is never artificial. She and her music are a breath of fresh air in an industry that seems to be slipping away and losing touch of what good performers and great music are really all about.
