NEW CASTLE, Del. — The sites of three historic forts on the Delaware River will again be linked by passenger ferry service beginning this weekend. Fort Mott State Park, in Pennsville Township, has returned as a stop on the seasonal Delaware City-Salem Ferry operated by the officials announced Friday.

The ferry will now operate on varying schedules between Delaware City, Del., the location of Fort DuPont, Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island in the Delaware River, the City of Salem (via Barber’s Basin on Tilbury Road at the Port of Salem) and Fort Mott. Service for 2014 begins on Saturday. “We are happy to be able to return to Fort Mott this year and yet continue to serve Salem,” said Heath Gehrke, director of ferry operations for the DRBA, in a statement. The ferry system was known for years as the Three Forts Ferry system because it linked Delaware City, the home of Fort DuPont, Pea Patch Island the home of Fort Delaware and Fort Mott. The ferry service made stops at Fort Mott for 15 years until 2012, when Superstorm Sandy severely damaged the pier facilities there. Because the timetable for repairs to the pier were uncertain for the 2013 season, the relocation of the ferry service to Salem was necessary, according to officials.

The relocation also meant the renaming of the ferry as the Delaware City-Salem Ferry because of its new stop in at Barber’s Basin on Tilbury Road. The addition of Salem City as a stop for the ferry was heralded last year with officials believing that Officials said they are pleased Fort Mott is back on the ferry route. According to the DRBA, on Saturday the passenger ferry service will begin service between Delaware City, Fort Delaware and Fort Mott, and run on Saturdays only, through May 17. Beginning on May 24, the ferry will expand operations to include both Saturdays and Sundays and holidays. Beginning June 11 and continuing through Labor Day, the ferry will operate Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. On weekends and holidays, the service operates until 7 p.m. Visitors take a one-half-mile ferry ride from Delaware City to Pea Patch Island.

A jitney provides transport from the island dock to the granite and brick fortress where so many Civil War prisoners were held. Beginning Tuesday, June 17, the ferry will also continue to operate limited service every Tuesday from Delaware City to Salem (Barber’s Basin) and Fort Delaware through Aug. Passengers can drive their cars to Barber’s Basin on Tilbury Road in Salem, board the ferry vessel for Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island, and take a walking tour of the historic fort.
